Future of Wrestling in Pakistan
The future of wrestling is, like with everything else, intertwined with its past and present. This combat sport had been in the doldrums for a long time despite being hugely popular in the country with immense wrestling talent. The gist of it is as follows:
Glorious Past
Its popularity goes back to a
pre-partition era when Pehlwani reigned as one of the top sports and gave birth
to wrestling legends such as Gama the Great, Bholu Pahalwan, Rahim Baksh
Sultaniwala that were worth their name in gold.
Slow Decline of Wrestling
The glorious past of wrestling
gradually faded into the background well after the creation of Pakistan.
Wrestling families attribute it to the lack of funding and sponsorship from the
government. Others lament that the sport wasn't lucrative any longer for the
talent to come forward and devote themselves to the long hours of training and
invest the money required for such heavy training.
A Platform-For Wrestlers & the People
Despite our champions making
waves in the Olympics, Commonwealth, Asian and South Asian Federation Games,
wrestling didn't have the platform to come into the mainstream and get the
limelight it deserved. Thankfully, due to people's passion for the sport,
several wrestling buffs decided to invest in a platform that did justice to
this macho sport.
ROP-The Present Looks Good
Ring of Pakistan, the first
professional wrestling company in Pakistan, set wheels in motion to design a
platform that brought the top international wrestlers to Pakistan in 2018.
Finally, the game changed. Four years down the line, the present is secure with
ROP getting ready to host its third season with all the hype associated with an
event of such level on December 17 and 18.
What the Future Holds-Making it Bigger and Better
Wrestling is no longer only
considered a sport dominated and enjoyed by men. With names such as Amale
Dib and Mariah May on the wrestling roster, the old stereotypes that
women are only good at catfights and ripping each other's hair out is getting
challenged. With these gender shifts, the market for wrestling is becoming more
diverse and fuller of opportunities. More and more men are bringing their
ladies and kids to watch these wrestling competitions pitting females against
each other.
Some traditionalists aren't too
happy but the public's majority is what makes up for such decisions. Since that
marker is in wrestling's favor, the future wrestling seasons will be held in equally
or more extravagant settings to deliver the ultimate wrestling right here at
home.
No need to go abroad to watch
your favorite international wrestlers dishing it out with their opponent. Now,
it's happening and will happen in Pakistan.
Wrestling Entertainment-Funding and Sponsorships
At the end of the day, wrestling
is entertainment not only for die-hard fans but also for young men and women
who want to get a glimpse of their favorite wrestling stars and watch them in
the ring instead of watching them on the screen. Plus, the event is
family-friendly so couples can bring their kids along.
All this counts in favor because
sponsors are more than willing to offer sponsorships while TV, satellite, and
streaming channels are also eager to cover the event and thereby increasing the
worth and value of wrestling tenfold ensuring that it will remain successful in
the future.
In a Nutshell
So far, the future of wrestling
looks promising, with Pakistanis backing it as spectators and as sponsors. If
things proceed on the same path, with no major disruption in the economic
sector, allowing further growth and investment opportunities in wrestling then
we are sure, together we will be able to take this incredible sport to new and
greater heights.
